Today marks 60 years of the rule of Queen Elizabeth II.
Today was the day that she ascended to the throne after the sad and early death of her father King George.
Being and Australian means that we are apart of the Commonwealth and we are often pushed into a debate about becoming a Republic. Frankly, I am a traditionalist and I love the Queen, I have read so much about her as I am always intrigued by the life of famous figures from the past.
Not many people realise that during World War II she didn't just sit behind the safety of the gates at Buckingham Palace, she actually joined the Women's Auxiliary Forces and became a mechanic. I love that she got out and did something, if you watch interviews with the women that she was working with, she is a really down to earth hard worker. So for me you can not go past those people of a certain age that pulled up their socks and did whatever they could to stop Hitler and the Japanese during those horrible years.
I also think that she really does work hard, harder than anyone could really imagine. I think good on her for holding up and amazing job that should not have been her fathers job let alone her job. She is so active, I can only hope to be that active when I reach 85.
I also love the fact that she is the same age as my Grandma who also joined the war effort as a Royal Australian Air Force cook, feeding those men here in Australia training hard to be sent around the world.
