National Anti-Bullying Day

Today many blogs are having a silent day to help raise awareness for what is happening in Japan.

However, today was the first annual Anti-Bullying Day in Australia.
This is a massive problem all over the world. Not just in Australia.
It has been highlighted in the news at the moment, after a Youtube video went viral about a 16 year old boy who'd been teased his whole school life finally fought back throwing a younger tormentor to the ground.

As a teacher I find bullying really disheartening and talking about it really important.  Kids would be so much happier in this world if they do not feel the need to bully, but rather feel safe, happy and loved in the world.
A lot of it comes from how children are raised to interact with others and also what they see on television.  I really think that age restrictions on TV shows and movies are so important having a Year 3 student talk about MA15+ shows is really disheartening, it makes kids grow up too quickly.

They watch things like The Simpsons and see the "Nerds" get teased and bullied and they think this is ok in real life.  By watching shows above their age they don't understand the show and don't get the jokes.  They just think its ok.

Anyway at school today we managed to make every lesson revolve around learning about bullying, what we should do if we are bullied and what to do if we see our friends are bullied.
It's funny kids know all about how bad bullying is, and tell you why they don't like it.
But then you turn around and they are teasing people. So random.

Anyway that was today.
I hope you all have a fabulous and positive weekend.
